Curriculum Vitae

Date of birth: 7 November 1940

Job: Professor of the Department of Systematic Zoology and Ecology, Biological Institute of the Eötvös Loránd University

Head of the Zootaxomomy Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences at the Eötvös Loránd University 2007-

Head of the Ph.D. Program „Zootaxonomy, Animal Ecology, Hydrobiology” of the Biology Ph.D. School of the Eötvös Loránd University1998-

Research: Taxonomy, faunistics, population biology and ecology of enchytraeid worms (Annelida: Enchytraeidae).

Until now 74 scientific papers were published, 52 species, 2 subspecies and 2 genera, new to science, were described. Revised a genera and numerous species. Recently she applied both morphological and molecular studies to separate similar enchytraeid species based on PCR-RFLP of the ITS region. She worked with enchytraeid species in many parts of the globe (from Estonia, Spitsbergen, Iceland, Greenland, Arctic Archipelago of Canada, Alaska, Palerctic tundra, Spain, Pyrenees, Balears-Icelands, Marokkó, South-Afrika, Iran, Ecuador, Subantarctic-Icelands, Borneo, Korea). Till now from the Hungarian fauna were described 86 species (14 genera) among them 21 species are new for the sciences and 54 new for the fauna.

Revealed the enchytraeid fauna of different nature conservation areas in Hungary (Sphagnum-bogs, along the shore of Lake Balaton, Bátorliget, Pilis Mts., Hungarian caves, Aggtelek N.P., Fertő-Hanság N.P.).

Carried out research for the first time on the consumption biology as well as frost and drought tolerance of enchytraeids, pointed out the function and importance of these worms in cycling of chemical elements and energyflow of the forest soils.

Comparative investigation of coniferal plants and original Querceto-Carpinetum forests seeking for anthropogenic effects.

Leader of a complex survey of the trerrestrial fauna for demonstration of habitat-fragmentation in the Kis-Balaton area. Leader of a complex survey established for the examination of the invertebrate diversity after the metall and cyanide pollution of the Tisza River in 2000.

New results achieved together with the microbiologists of the Departement of Microbiology of the ELTE in the determination of the intestinal microbial community of enchytraeids.

Revealed various life-history strategies during the research of enchytraeid reproduction biology. Demonstrated self-fertilization for the first time within the enchytraeid family.

Has been in international collaboration with prof. Dr. Bent Christensen (University Koppenhaga, Danmark) since 1994, working on the subject ’Enchytraeids of the North Holarctis’. Organised a field expedition in Alaska together with prof. Dr. MacLean (University Fairbanks, Alaska) in 2001 (Nato project).

Currently processing the collectied material from Alaska and doing faunistical and taxonomical investigation of enchytraeids, including communities from many different habitats in the Hungarian Central Mountains (grant of the Hungarian National Research Fundation, OTKA).
